Jeff Stanek (b. 1984) grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, and is finishing a Masters degree at Indiana University. The 2008 ASCAP Foundation Leonard Bernstein Fellow at Tanglewood, and a Fellow of the MacDowell Colony (2009) and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (2008), he has received two BMI Student Composer Awards (2003 Carlos Surinach Prize, 2005), the Victor Herbert ASCAP Young Composers Award from the National Federation of Music Clubs (2008), first prize in the CEMJKO International Electroacoustic Music Contest (2006), a Dean's Prize from Indiana University (2003), and other awards for his music. Recent festivals to program his work include the Tanglewood Music Festival (2008), Bowdoin International Music Festival (2007), the Midwest Composers Symposium (2007, 2003), and the Ball State University Festival of New Music (2008). He studied composition from 2000-2002 at The Walden School in New Hampshire, and earned a Bachelors of Music degree with High Distinction from Indiana University in 2006, where he also taught as an Associate Instructor of Music Theory from 2007-2008. His teachers include (in alphabetical order) composers Claude Baker, Stephen Dembski, David Drexler, Don Freund, Michael Gandolfi, John Gibson, John Harbison, Jeffrey Hass, Per Martensson, P.Q. Phan, Shulamit Ran, Augusta Read Thomas, Sven-David Sandstrom, Chinary Ung, and Richard Wernick; pianists Jean-Louis Haguenauer and Renato Premezzi; and cellists Patricia Germain and Uri Vardi.
